He wanted to do something special for his secretary Kim Cook. He had fallen in love with her over the past few years, and he had a hunch that she felt the same for him. He had dressed a little nicer today than any other day. The fact that it was Valentine’s Day wasn’t his main reason, it was also Kim’s birthday. She was born on a day of love, and ever since Skinner saw her, he felt a special something for her. Perhaps it was her warm smile. Or just the fact that she was born on a day of love. He didn’t know for sure. But what he did know was that he wanted to let her know that he does feel something more for her than just a professional relationship. He sat at his desk, looked at the five red roses he had gotten for her. Red. The color of love. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ Agent Scully and Reyes get off the elevator and step into the basement hallway. Scully is dressed in a nice red work suit, and Monica dressed in black slacks and a red sweater. Both of them in the spirit of Valentine’s Day. “Are you doing anything special for Valentine’s Day?” Monica asked Scully. “I don’t have any plans. I’m single again this year.” Dana said, sounding pretty glum about it. “Don’t be so glum, Dana.” Monica assured her. “I’m sure you’ll get a date tonight.” “How can you be so sure?” Dana asked. “I know things.” Monica answered with a very mischievous tone. “You know things?” Dana asked. “Tell me this isn’t your ‘I see the future’ ordeal again.” Monica gave a little laugh and smiled at her. “Let’s just say that I know something.” Monica smiled at her once again. Agent Doggett walks out of the office. A file in his hands, not looking up to see where he is going, when suddenly he rams right into Agent Scully, their heads bumping. He drops the file folder to the ground. “Ow.” Agent Scully said. “I’m sorry, I didn’t see you.” Doggett said. “You ok?” Scully nods her head. “Just wasn’t expecting to ram into you this morning, that’s all.” “I’m really sorry.” Doggett said. “Well, I’m gonna head to Brad’s office.” Monica says, knowing that she should leave them alone right now. “I’ll see you guys later.” They haven’t even noticed her. Doggett and Scully are too wrapped up in their own conversation to realize that she was even there. Monica shrugs her shoulders and walks away and back towards the elevator. The elevator opens and there stands Assistant Director Brad Follmer. Just the man she was going to see. She gives him a smile and goes into the elevator with him. As the doors shut, Monica gives Brad a seductive look… +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ Meanwhile, Kim Cook has just entered the building. She reaches her office outside of Skinner’s. She seems a bit confused that the office has already been opened. Something on her desk catches her eye. It’s the five red roses from Skinner. She goes over to her desk and sets her purse down. She picks up the flowers. She looks at the card. “Wishing you a wonderful birthday and Valentine’s Day. [signed] Walter” Her warm smile crosses her face. She wasn’t expecting this at all. Skinner has slightly opened his office door to see if she was in. She hasn’t noticed him, but he has noticed her. It brings a smile to his face to see her happy. He quietly steps out of his office. “Good morning, Kim.” Skinner says. Kim turns around, the smile still on her face. “Good morning, sir.” She says. “Thank you for the flowers. I-I wasn’t expecting them at all.” Skinner smiles. “Well, ya know.” He says, trying to hide his feelings… unsuccessfully though. “It’s your birthday and Valentine’s Day. I thought it would be nice.” She smiles at him. She feels the same way about him as he does for her. “Well thank you so much, Walt- I mean, sir.” Kim said. “You can call me Walter.” Skinner said with a smile, hoping he wouldn’t come off too strong… He didn’t want to get in trouble with the Bureau’s rules and regulations, and he certainly didn’t want her to loose her job. He goes back into his office. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ Meanwhile, Agent Mulder waits for the elevator on the fifth floor with a jelly doughnut. Why he is on the fifth floor, we’ll never know, but he’s there. He continues to hit the down button. Waiting and waiting for the elevator to come. It hasn’t moved from the second floor in a long time. He let’s out an impatient sigh. “Come on.” He says, hitting the button continuously. Finally, the elevator starts to make its way up to the fifth floor. “Finally.” Mulder says. He takes a bite of his jelly doughnut, and some of the jelly falls on his shirt, however, he doesn’t notice. The elevator reaches the fifth floor and the doors open. Inside the elevator is Monica Reyes and Brad Follmer. Mulder gets in. Brad gets out. “I’ll see you later tonight?” Brad asks Monica. “I’m flattered.” Says Mulder, thinking Brad was talking to him. “I’d love to spend Valentine’s Day with you.” Mulder smiles at him. Brad and Monica look at him like he’s nuts. “He was talking to me Agent Mulder.” Monica says. “Oh.” Mulder is embarrassed. “Yeah, I’ll see you tonight.” Monica says, and gives Brad a smile. The elevator doors shut once again. Mulder turns to Monica. “Do you know why the elevator was stuck on the second level for a long long time?” Mulder asks. “No…” Monica says, with a hint of guilt in her voice, she knows why… “I really wonder what was going on.” Mulder says, oblivious to what was going on. He turns to face her once again. “You know, I had to walk up here because Kersh wouldn’t let me on the elevator, and then this one was stuck on two. So I had to walk all the way up here to get a jelly doughnut.” Mulder says, suddenly stopping and seeming curious. “Did you get dressed in the dark this morning?” Monica looks at him in confusion. “What?” “You missed a few buttons on your shirt.” Mulder says. Monica looks down… oops. She fixes her shirt. “Yeah, I’ve done that before.” Mulder says. “You know, gotten dressed in the dark and all my cloths were on backwards, inside-out, and they didn’t match at all. I was so embarrassed.” Monica looks up to see how many more floors of Mulder’s rambles she’ll have to take. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ Meanwhile, down in the basement, Scully and Doggett are reviewing over a case. Scully is on the phone. “Thank you.” Scully says into the phone, then hangs up. Doggett looks over to her. “Well?” He asks. “That was the medical examiner. He said the cause of death was from the bullet in the head.” Scully says. “Agent Mulder was wrong, it wasn’t aliens becoming hostile and attacking us with laser beams.” Doggett can’t help but laugh at how she said that last part. She rolled it off so seriously. Scully is trying to keep a straight face, but she can’t and ends up laughing a little too. “He’ll be heart broken when he finds out.” Scully says about Mulder. “Or will he be happy that they aren’t hostile so he knows it’s still safe to attempt being abducted?” Doggett questions. Scully thinks about that one for a moment. “You’re right. He will be happy.” She says. “Anyway, what are you doing tonight?” Doggett asks. “Well, considering I’m single again this Valentine’s Day, I think I might just stay at home and watch some stupid horror movie and come to the realization that my life isn’t that bad since I’d know to get out of the house when someone is trying to kill me.” Scully says. “So basically, I’m busy moping about being single.” “Well that’s too bad.” Doggett says. “What do you mean?” Scully asks. “Well, I was thinking that you and I could go out for a nice dinner and catch a late movie or something.” Doggett says. “Well, hey! I’d love too.” Scully says very happy that she got a date. How did Monica know? Hmm… “Great. I’ll pick you up at seven?” Doggett asks. “That would be wonderful.” She gives him a smile. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ That night, John Doggett stood in front of his bathroom mirror. He was dressed nicely, however he looks a little bit panicked. It seems as if he’s about to say something to himself in the mirror, but he stops his thoughts and just looks at himself. He does this routine a few more times. Then, he finally gets out what he was about to say. “Dana, you look nice.” He says to the mirror, practicing what he’s going to say to Scully when he picks her up. He doesn’t like how that came out. He looks frustrated. He leaves the bathroom and paces in his living room. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ Meanwhile, at the same time, Monica Reyes is getting ready for her date tonight with Brad Follmer. Her hair is done nicely, and she’s wearing a nice black dress. She is applying make up when she is interrupted by her phone ringing. She picks up. “Hello?” “Mon’, it’s John.” He sounds freaked. “What is it?” Monica asks. John Doggett paced around his living room, scratching the back of his neck. “I don’t know what to do.” He says bluntly. “What do you mean you ‘don’t know what to do’?” She asks. “I did it, Mon’.” He says. “You mean you actually asked Dana out this time?” She asks. “Yeah, but I don’t know what to do.” “I don’t get it.” She says. “What exactly is it that you don’t know what to do?” She waits for him to answers, but he doesn’t. “John?” “What?” “Just making sure you were still there.” Monica says. “I am.” He says. “But I don’t know what to do.” “Well, you’ve asked her out, right?” “Yeah.” “Did you say if you were picking her up, or were you meeting somewhere?” “I’m gonna pick her up.” He says. “So what’s the problem?” Monica asks. “I don’t know what to say when I pick her up.” Monica can’t believe this. “What are you saying? You want me to write you up a dialogue to have with her?” Monica asks. “No. I mean, what do I tell her?” “John, you’re a grown man. I’m sure you’ve been on other dates before, right?” Monica asks. “Of course I have.” Doggett says. “So, what did you tell all those other women?” Monica asks. “It’s different now.” He says. “Different?” “Yeah.” “What do you mean by different?” “Well, I just have this feeling that Dana and I are meant to be forever.” John says. “A feeling?” Monica asks. “I didn’t think John Doggett believed in ‘feelings’. Wasn’t that just a bunch of hocus pocus?” “Shut up, Mon’. You know what I mean.” “I know, I’m just picking on you.” She says. “Well what do I say?” He says. “Tell her she looks nice.” Monica says. “And don’t forget to give her flowers.” Doggett freezes… flowers… he forgot flowers. There is a beat of silence. “You still there, John?” Monica asks. “Yeah...” John says, his tone has changed to another panic. “What’s wrong now?” Monica says, a hint of irritation in her voice. She checks her watch. “I didn’t get her flowers.” John says meekly. “Then go get some. I have to go. Brad is expecting me soon.” Monica says. “But what if I need your help?” “My help?” she asks. “Yeah, what if I need your advice.” “Let me tell you this right now: I don’t care.” Monica says. “I have to go, so I’m hanging up the phone now.” “Ok, bye.” Doggett says, still a little worried that he’ll do something stupid. Monica hangs up the phone and lets out a long sigh. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ Fox Mulder ran a comb through his hair, smiled at the mirror and fixed his bright red bow tie. He looks ready to go. He grabs some flowers and a heart shaped box of chocolates and heads out his door. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ The sun was setting, and Kim Cook was walking in the park down the walking path to where Skinner told her to meet him. The park was empty, and the stars in the sky sparkled. Kim arrived where Skinner told her to meet him, however she can’t find him. She looks around the area, becoming a bit paranoid… it is dark out and she’s all alone. “You look beautiful.” Comes the manly voice of Walter Skinner from one of the shadows. “Walter?” Kim asks. Walter steps into the light. He’s wearing a tuxedo and carrying two wine classes and a bottle of champagne. His stunning image brings a smile to Kim’s face. She never knew Walter could be so romantic… Walter approaches Kim and hands her a wineglass. She takes it and he fills the glass with a little bit of champagne. He does the same to his glass. “What’s all this for, Walter?” Kim asks. “Kim, I don’t know if I should say this, but I think my actions tonight say it for me.” He looks her in the eyes. “Over the past few years we’ve been working together, I’ve… I’ve grown to like you in more than a professional way. I hope I’m not out of line, and I hope I don’t offend you, but… I get the feeling that you feel the same way about me.” Walter is nervous, not realizing that she accepted his invitation to come here tonight. “Walter.” Kim says softly. “I’ve had feelings for you too. I was afraid to let you know because you’re my boss and the Bureau doesn’t look highly on…” “Yeah…” Walter says, knowing what she’s going to say. “The Bureau doesn’t have to know.” Kim says. She looks into Walter’s eyes and gives him a smile. He smiles back and takes her hand and leads her to a bench. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ On the other side of town, Doggett walks up the stairs of an apartment building and knocks on apartment number 35. He looks nervous and has flowers in his hands. He runs his hand nervously through his hair hoping he looks all right. Footsteps are heard coming to the door, and the door opens. “Hi.” Scully says with a smile on her face. “Hey.” Doggett says, very tense and nervous. “Come on in.” Scully says, as she moves to the side allowing him room to enter. “I’m not ready yet, I’ll be done in just a moment.” “All right.” Doggett says. Scully starts to head back to her bathroom to get ready. “I uh…” Doggett starts off sounding very nervous. Scully turns to face him. “I um… got these for you.” He hands her the flowers with a smile. Scully comes up to him. “Thank you.” She smells the flowers and it brings a smile to her face. “I’ll go put them in water.” Doggett smiles as Scully heads to her kitchen. A small time later, Scully comes out and is ready to go. “You look nice, Dana.” Doggett says, repeating the line he was practicing. He smiles, not only at her, but at himself for delivering the line well. “Thank you.” Scully says. Doggett offers Scully his arm and they head out the door to go on their Valentine’s Day date. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ Brad Follmer’s apartment is nicely lit with romantic candles. Brad is in a hurry to finish cleaning the place before Monica comes over. There is a knock at his door. He quickly tosses his coat in a closet by the door. He opens the door and let’s Monica in. “You cleaned?” Monica says with a smile. “Just wanted to make tonight wonderful.” Brad tells her with a smile. “It’s only Valentine’s Day.” Monica says. “I know.” Brad says with a smile. “And I also know how much you love this holiday.” Monica gives him a smile. “So what exactly did you have in mind?” Monica says with a sly smile. She goes up to Brad and gives him a kiss. “I think you already know…” He winks at her and leads her into the living room. Two wineglasses are on the table and a bottle of champagne is next to it. Brad and Monica sit down on his couch. “Mon, I’ve been thinking…” Brad says as he digs through is pocket to find a little box. “Thinking about what?” Monica asks, oblivious to the little box in his hand. “We’ve been together for a while now, and I think it’s time to move our relationship in-“ Brad is cut off by the ringing of his phone. Not happy, Brad looks over at his phone and answers it. “Hello?” Brad says, hoping this will be a very quick conversation. “It’s John Doggett, I need to speak with Monica.” Doggett says, sounding like a nervous wreck. Brad lets out a sigh and hands the phone to Monica. “It’s for you.” He doesn’t sound that happy. Monica takes the phone. “Hello?” Monica says, sounding confused as to who could be calling her at Brad’s. “Monica… it’s me, John.” Monica rolls her eyes. She can’t believe he’s calling her now. “Good God, John. What is it?” Monica says, letting irritation ring through her voice to let him know she’s not happy with him. “I screwed up.” John says. “John, you’re a grown up. Stop pestering me about-“ Monica is cut off by John. “I ran out on my date with Dana.” Monica is speechless. What idiot would do that to a woman on Valentine’s Day. “John, I can’t deal with your problems right-“ He cuts her off again. “What do I do?” John asks. He’s freaked out. “I don’t know, John.” Monica says. “I don’t want to deal with this. I’m having a very nice evening with Brad-“ He cuts her off. “But-“ She cuts him off by hanging up the phone. The best way to end the conversation is to not continue arguing about how he shouldn’t call her tonight. Monica puts the phone off the hook and turns to Brad. “I’m sorry, Brad.” Monica says. “John… he’s just… an idiot.” Brad nods his head. “Enough about him.” Brad says. “I agree.” Monica says with a smile. “You were saying?” “I was saying that… well… I think we should move our relationship in a new direction.” Monica looks at him puzzled. “What I’m saying is…” Brad pauses, getting nervous. “Will you marry me?” Monica’s eyes light up. She wasn’t expecting such a wonderful surprise on Valentine’s Day. “Yes.” Monica says, her voice shaking while trying to contain her emotions of happiness. Brad pulls out the little box and puts a diamond engagement ring on her finger. Brad gives her a kiss. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ Meanwhile, walking the streets of Washington D.C., Fox Mulder finds himself starring at a small little Italian restaurant. He looks both ways before crossing the street and enters. The restaurant is small, not crowded. Mulder looks over everyone who is eating there tonight. So many couples and smiling faces. However, one face isn’t smiling… Mulder looks saddened as he approaches a brunette woman sitting alone at a small booth seat. Mulder recognizes the woman as that of his long lost love Diana Fowley. He takes a deep breath as he fixes his bow tie. He checks the flowers to make sure they still look nice. He walks up to Diana. “Diana?” Mulder says, a little shocked to see her here. Diana Fowley looks up at Mulder, surprised to see him. “Fox?” Diana says. “Do you mind if I sit down with you?” Mulder asks, indicating the empty seat in front of her. “Not at all.” Diana says. Mulder sits. “What are you doing here, Fox?” Diana asks. “Well, since I don’t have a date for Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d let destiny take over and take me to whomever needed someone tonight.” Mulder answers. “I guess you’re my destiny then.” Diana says with a smile. “I guess I am.” Mulder says, glad to see her. “Here, these are for you.” Mulder hands Diana the flowers he’s been carrying around. She takes them with a smile. “It’s been a long time, Fox.” Diana states. “Yes, too long.” Mulder comments. “What have you been up to?” “I’ve been working overseas with the government. You?” “I’m working on the x-files still. I haven’t found Samantha.” Mulder looks down, still feeling sad from the loss of his sister. “One day, Fox.” Diana says, taking Mulder’s hand in hers. “One day you’ll find her.” “I hope you’re right, Diana.” Mulder says. He looks into Diana eyes, and for once sees sincerity that no one else gives him in the x-files. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ Later that night, Mulder and Diana leave the restaurant. They are both in a good mood, very glad that destiny brought them together. To their surprise, they see John Doggett standing in a telephone booth with the receiver to his ear. He’s in shock and looks as if he hasn’t moved for a few hours. Mulder looks concerned as he and Diana approach Doggett. Mulder knocks on the telephone booth door. Doggett looks over at him. He looks like a lost puppy dog. “Agent Doggett?” Mulder says. “She hung up on me.” Doggett says, his voice muffled from being in a shut telephone booth. He’s in a state of shock. “How about you get out of that small telephone booth, Doggett.” Mulder says. Doggett nods his head and hangs up the phone. He steps out of the telephone booth. “What happened?” Mulder asks. “I was a frickin’ idiot.” Doggett says, felling horrible and looking rather glum. “What did you do?” Mulder asks. “I finally got the courage to ask Dana on a date.” Doggett says. “Then I go and muck it up by leaving her without warning.” “You left her?” Mulder says shocked. “Why?” “I don’t know.” Doggett says. “I got nervous. When I get nervous, I do stupid things.” “So who were you on the phone with?” Mulder asks. “I called Monica to get her advice.” Doggett says. “John, don’t call her when she’s having a Valentine’s Evening with Brad.” Mulder says. “You should’ve gone back to Scully and told her that you’re dumb and got nervous. I’m sure she would’ve understood.” “You talk in the past tense, as if I’m too late.” Doggett says. “Well… to be honest… it is a little late.” Mulder says. “When did you leave her?” “Around seven-thirty this evening.” Doggett admits. Mulder sighs… he can’t believe this. “Do you realize that it’s eleven o’clock now?” Mulder says. “It’s way too late to go back to the restaurant and restore things with Dana.” “I didn’t want to muck this up.” Doggett says. “Well you did.” Mulder bluntly tells him. “But you know what…” Doggett looks over at Mulder hopeful. “It may not be too late…” Mulder says with a sly smile. +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+ Dana Scully is sitting on her couch reading “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and eating chocolate ice cream right out of the container. She looks sad that Doggett left her all alone on their first date. Outside, Scully hears the faint sound of a man singing. She looks up curious and goes to her window to see who it is. Down below, Doggett stands in the street underneath Scully’s window. Mulder and Diana are out of view, but watching him to make sure he doesn’t mess up. Mulder looks happy as Doggett sings “Superstar” by The Carpenters. “Long ago and oh so far away, I fell in love with you before the second show…” Doggett nervously sings as he sees Scully open her window. “John?” Scully says confused. Doggett looks over at Mulder and Diana. Mulder encourages him to continue singing the song. “Your guitar it sounds so sweet and clear, But you're not really here it's just the radio.” Doggett continues. “John, what are you doing?” Scully is shocked by this. Mulder steps into view of Scully. “He’s singing you a song, Scully!” Mulder shouts up at her. Scully knows this, but knows Mulder is only trying to help. Diana comes up to him and pulls him out of view again. “Keep singing, Doggett!” Mulder says excitedly. “Don't you remember you told me you loved me baby, You said you'd be coming back this way again baby…” Doggett sings. Suddenly, Scully disappears from view of her window. Doggett looks to Mulder with panic. “She left.” Doggett says. “Oh no…” Mulder says with worry. Mulder comes up to him and puts his arm around Doggett’s shoulder to “comfort” him. “There, there.” Mulder says sympathetically. “At least you tried.” Mulder pats him on the back and then returns to Diana. They leave Doggett all alone to wonder what went wrong with singing to Scully. Doggett looks down feeling rather glum and turns away from the building and towards his truck. “John?” Doggett turns around to see Scully with a smile on her face. Doggett is shocked to see her. “Dana, I’m-“ Doggett starts. Scully comes up to him and puts her index finger to his lips to shut him up. “It’s ok, John.” Scully says. “I get nervous and do dumb things.” Doggett explains. “I know.” Scully says with a smile. “I talked to Monica, she told me you do dumb things sometimes.” Doggett looks down, still embarrassed that he left her because he got nervous. “Tonight’s not a total waste, John.” Scully says. Doggett looks up at her. “You want to come in and watch a movie or something?” Scully asks. “Yeah.” Doggett says with a smile. Scully returns his smile with hers. Doggett puts his arm around her shoulder as they head up the stairs to spend the rest of Valentine’s Day with each other. “You are going to finish singing to me, right?” Scully asks. Doggett laughs and looks down at her. “Maybe…” Doggett says with a twinkle in his eye. THE END.
